Changes to Directions 1st Edition: Summer Walks 7-14

Folkestone Walk from 'Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside near London'

Updates (at Feb 2025) to the summer walks in the first edition of 'Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside near London' Julia Smith. All these updates have been made in the 2nd edition (published Feb 2025).  For each walk below, I've listed the more significant changes rather than all the small ones.

Walk 7: Manningtree Circular

No 1. They’ve built a new multi-story car park at the station. So turn right down the slope to the lower car park. Just before you reach the vehicles ….

No 5. The Constable exhibition has moved, so you need to turn right to reach it (before you reach the scene of the Hay Wain).

No 8. There is no longer a footpath post disguised or otherwise.

No 9 At the end of this direction, there is no longer a kissing gate so instead towards end of pond bear left following the footpath and turn right onto a tarmac drive.

No 16. This addition is clearer …. turn left on the footpath, go half right, diagonally across the field.

No 20. There is no longer a kissing gate, just a gap in the fence.

No 22. The path is longer than I imply and is flat initially.

Walk 8: Winchelsea to Hastings

Good news. The coast path has reopened! So, ignore nos. 20-22 and just continue along the coast path towards Hastings. You eventually come up onto the grassy downland of East Hill. Continue ahead until you reach the fire beacon in direction 23 and then the rest of the directions are fine.

Be mindful there are quite a few small changes, gates have disappeared, stiles have been replaced with gates, the house in no 11. is obscured, the bench in no 18. is no longer there.

Walk 9: Otford Circular

Close to the station, large water-filled cavities close to the surface were discovered at Otford. Therefore, the first part of the walk is therefore re-routed. Exit the platform as before and turn left instead of right. Turn right at the main road and then take the first road on the right. You’ll shortly arrive at direction 3 i.e. you pick up the North Downs Way across the road.

No 5. The Kemsing Down notice board has been moved, it's now on the right.

No 6. Ignore the point about bench and valley view.

No 9. The tall footpath post has disappeared.

No 14. Follow the footpath sign ahead not the one that directs you right.

No 15. Footpath post has disappeared.

No 20. The footpath sign doesn’t point to the church now. At the footpath post take the path that leads into the churchyard.

 Walk 10: Cuxton Circular

No 10. The following is clearer. Go right to the bottom of the hill and take a sharp right before a metal field gate on the right.

No 11. This last sentence is clearer…. Ignore another left turn and continue ahead. When the path bends to the right continue ahead through gates into Kitchen field.

 Walk 11: Folkestone Circular

No 10.  The England Coast path sign has snapped off -  turn left at a post after first graffiti covered disused building.

No 13. The sign to the Four Seasons Nature Trail hasn’t been replaced. Turn left at a large square danger signpost.

No 17. The path to the green and signpost have disappeared. So, after Martello tower, continue on the road and turn left onto the green after wooden shed, before the busier road.

Walk 12: Frinton-on-Sea to Walton-on-the-Naze

No 17. The banks have eroded. So now, towards the end of this direction after the shallow pool. At the end of the pool a bramble bank juts out a little. Continue on, past an inlet to a raised causeway with a little tern information board on the top. Climb up the causeway and follow the path to the sea wall.

Walk 13: Shoreham to Eynesford

No 3. A new permissive path has opened. So now, Turn right along the road. Shortly after the railway bridge follow the permissive path on the right, parallel to the road.

No 4. Replaced with - At the end of the field, follow the path right. You soon reach a flint wall, turn left through the gate with a Commonwealth War Graves sign nearly, into the churchyard, walk between yew trees and exit the other side.

 Walk 14: Lewes Circular

No 5. This is clearer ‘At the end of the first golf club car park, turn right along the footpath, go through the gate and follow the main track.
