Tring Circular Walk from Walks for Each Season |
Updates (at Feb 2025) to the winter walks in the first edition of 'Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside near London' Julia Smith. All these updates are in the 2nd edition (published Feb 2025). For each walk below, I've listed the more significant changes rather than all the small ones.
Walk 1: Eridge Circular – no changes
Walk 2: Chorleywood to Little Chalfont
No 7. The farmer has created another field, so you now pass through two gates on your way to the top.
No8: Gates have been removed from the churchyard exit.
No11. There is no gate before you turn immediately right.
Walk 3: Tring Circular
The volume of visitors to the Ashridge Estate is causing
damage to the Special Area of Conservation. Therefore, I’ve changed the route
from no.23. You explore Dockey Wood at no 23. to get your bluebell fix and then
retrace your steps to point 21 and follow the national Trust Boundary Trail (North)
online here Ashridge
boundary trail | Hertfordshire | National Trust until you reach the
National trust Café(near no 37 - the Bridgewater Monument).
Walk past the National Trust café and past a multiple armed
signpost on the right and continue downhill. Ignore a right turnoff and later a
left turnoff. Later take the right fork.
You can then resume directions at no 38 ‘At the bottom turn right onto the road to reach the village’.
Walk 5: Penshurst to Leigh
A couple of changes (in italics) to make the directions a
little clearer
No 7. Follow the footpath across a field and go through a
gap in the hedge.
No 8. Continue ahead and follow the path as it bends left
(is better than the current follow this main well-trodden path as it bends
left)…
No 9. …take the path on the right (diagonally across the
field to the far right corner and through a strip of trees into the next field)
which in 400m ends at a road.
No.28 Replace with ‘Continue ahead past Penshurst Place. Shortly
after the footpath post, ignore a right fork. Continue ahead passing a group of
fir trees on the right.
No 33. ….initially along an avenue of trees. When the
path eventually bends left, continue ahead across a field. The path ahead then
follows a fence on the left until you eventually descend to a road.
Walk 6: Deal to Dover
There are a few changes on this walk
Nos 6 and 7. Replace with Walk in front of the Zetland Arms.
Continue ahead across the shingle beach as directed by the signpost. When you
near the road, come off the shingle to join the road and continue in the same
direction.
No 11. This is better ‘Shortly before the obelisk take
the left fork, as directed by the coast path sign and continue walk in front of the old white
coastguards building.
No 12. This last sentence is better ….After the Leas you
enter trees, eventually the path forks, take the left fork down steps to the
bay.
No 16. They have moved the footpath post so it’s now
on the right.
Nos 20 & 21. Replace with You soon join a wide stone
path, that descends from the lighthouse, laid by the National Trust to reduce
erosion, from the many visitors to this section of the walk. Follow this path for
one and a half miles, it will take you around Fan Bay, over Corn Hill and
around Langdon Hole.
