Five years after I’d finalised directions for the first edition of ‘Walks for Each Season’, more had changed than I’d anticipated. Housing estates had sprung up, a path had been closed on the Guildford circular, a road fell away revealing the impassable chasm of HS2 on the Wendover route, damage caused by too much footfall in part of the Ashridge Estate became evident, large water-filled cavities close to the surface were discovered at Otford and a section of the coastal path into Hastings was reopened. Consequently, each of these walks has been slightly rerouted.
As anticipated, there were many small changes; stiles had
replaced gates, gates had been removed or replaced with kissing gates, metal
gates had replaced wooden ones, signposts had disappeared, information boards
had been moved, fences had been erected creating ‘new’ fields and enclosing
footpaths.
Each walk has been updated in the second edition (published Feb 2025). If you have the first edition and don't want to buy the second, you can find changes to walks in four blog posts, one for each season. All posted in Feb 2025
A couple of years ago, I finally subscribed to the OS Maps
Premium app. I wish I'd done so earlier, as it shows you exactly where you are
on Ordnance Survey maps. I can't recommend it enough. It's a great companion to
the book.
