Guildford to Chilworth Walk in 'Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside' |
Updates (at Feb 2025) to the summer walks in the first edition of 'Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside near London' Julia Smith. All these updates are in the 2nd edition (published Feb 2025). For each walk below, I've listed the more significant changes rather than all the small ones.
Walk 15: East Farleigh to Yalding
Several orchards have been dug up since the publication of
the first edition, so bear that in mind as you read the directions.
No 13. The footpath sign straight ahead has disappeared, so
do follow the direction in the book – it is an official footpath.
No 32. A housing estate has been built, so at the beginning
of this direction, when you reach the road you turn right. The new housing
estate and road extension are on your left.
Walk 16: Richmond Circular – still all ok
Walk 17: Sevenoaks Circular – still all ok
Walk 18: Benfleet to Southend – still all ok
Walk 19: Wendover to Princes Risborough
When I revisited this walk, a road fell away revealing the
impassable chasm of HS2
Nos 1. Replace with ‘Exit
the station, turn right and walk up to the main road. Turn right and follow the
road over the railway bridge. Turn right immediately after the bridge and walk
over the HS2 bridge, up the small hill, cross the road at the zebra crossing
and take the first left (note: Ordnance Survey haven’t updated their map with
HS2 for the new road layout).’
No 2. Replace with ‘As
the road bends left, turn right onto the footpath signposted Ridgeway’.
No 7. After the driveway, the field has been cut in two, so
you now pass through two gates.
No 13. This last sentence is clearer ‘At the bottom
(after steps and walking alongside a field’
While we waited for our train we popped into the Bird in
Hand pub, a lovely little pub – recommended.
20: Guildford to Chilworth
A significant path has been closed. So the route has been
changed, but this doesn’t affect how good this walk is.
No 3 & 4. Replace the last two sentences of no 3 and the
whole of 4 with ‘At the next
footbridge, turn right towards the Mill Mead Sign. Walk along Porridge Pot
Alley, then turn left along the road. When the road bears right, continue ahead
but slightly left along Flower Walk. At the end turn left down an alley which
takes you to the Wey Navigation.’
No 5. As directed turn right, but it’s now only
500m to the footbridge.
No 8. This last
sentence in this direction is clearer ‘Continue ahead and walk up stairs and
turn right at the top, continue uphill.’
No 9. Replace with ‘pass the clearing on the left
including Cathedral View and later take the first wide footpath on the right,
which follows the contour of a steep slope.
No 13 replace with ‘Pass through another gate, shortly
after take the left fork and go through a kissing gate into a camping field.’
No 15. There is no longer a left fork halfway. Instead ‘Go
through the wood and at a curved T junction turn slightly right, slightly
uphill, to come out of the wood. Turn left along the road.’
